DIY – Safe Play-Doh

Sep 6, 2023 | Aromatherapy, DIY, Emotions, Essential Oils, Family, Kiddos, Recipes

There is something so therapeutic about playing with Play-Doh. I want to share this recipe with you because I love it and if you’ve been following along for a while you’ll know I have made it several times over the years with my kids and they help make it too.

It’s safe and nontoxic, and you can make a lot of it. It stores sooooo well, just place it in a ziplock or airtight container.

And the best part, you only need a couple of ingredients.

It’s made with natural coloring like cocoa powder or you can buy these guys off Amazon which are basically fruit in powder form.

It’s safe for the littles to put in their mouth, although it doesn’t taste good and I still don’t recommend it since you aren’t making this for a meal. Don’t forget to add several drops of your favorite calming vitality oil each time you use it.

Texture play is so good for our kiddos and adding the oils is great for emotional calmness. •

Here is the recipe⬇️

Ingredients:

  • Pick your calming oil like lavender vitality or kid power which smells like a creamsicle. These are a few of my favorite essential oils.
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 3 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 Tbsp cream of tartar
  • Food coloring (you can buy natural coloring or add cocoa powder, turmeric, blue majik, beet juice, and more)
  • Storage containers

Directions:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together in a glass bowl except for your essential oil.
  2. Pour the mixture into a frying pan and stir over low heat.
  3. Cook until the Play-Doh is not sticky anymore.
  4. Put Play-Doh onto wax paper and let it cool down.
  5. Add your essential oil to the Play-Doh (if you used natural spices to color the Play-Doh, you will need to add more EO drops to help mask the spice aroma).
  6. Now you are ready to use the Play-Doh.
  7. Store in a container to prevent it from drying out.
  8. Before using the Play-Doh again, you may add a few drops of your calming essential oil. And feel free to add in little things for more sensory play. I linked rainbow wooden toys here.

Have fun and enjoy.
