I love this topic so much and because of that can be long-winded about the benefits of aromatherapy and why every single person should be utilizing it in their life! So let me keep this short and sweet.
Aromatherapy uses plant extracts (essential oils) to promote health and well-being within the body. This is done by inhalation, topical use, or by ingestion (only ones that are approved for internal use!). The compounds and fragrances of the oils work on the limbic system (where we process emotions + memories) and can help relax and clear the mind as well as release emotional trauma. This is a practice that has been used for centuries! If you’re a bible reader, you’ll remember that Frankincense, Myrrh, Cinnamon, Balsam, etc. were all commonly used for sacred and secular use. (Read this article to learn more about how these oils were used in ancient times.)
You can use essential oils to support your entire body from head to toe. Use them daily in your skincare regimen for glowing skin and a healthy complexion. Apply them to your temples to ease head tension. To your wrists to uplift mood and reduce stress. Apply to your chest to support healthy, deep breathing. Rub on your belly to alleviate digestive discomfort. To your abdomen to soothe menstrual cramps. To your legs and knees for relief after exercise or an active day. Use on your ankles to support and balance female hormones. And to the soles of your feet for immune support, sleep support, etc.
And honestly, this is just touching the surface of how they can be used!
Essential oils are extracted from the plants by using steam distillation, resin tapping, or cold-pressing. Each plant is linked to specific health benefits, and it takes a lot of plant material to yield a tiny amount of oil. For example, it takes 1 pound of peppermint to make a 15ml bottle of peppermint oil, or 50 rose flowers to make just 1 drop of rose oil! No wonder these little bottles are so potent and powerful.
I also think it’s important to say that aromatherapy does not provide a cure for diseases or ailments, but studies (DM me if you’d like more info) have shown that it can support your body for various conditions. And support is what our bodies need on a daily basis. The truth is, we are exposed to toxins every single day that are completely out of our control. And our bodies are strained because of it. Having a solid self-care routine that can mitigate and alleviate this stress is extremely important. If you’re struggling to get into a good routine, aromatherapy can be a great way to start.
As is the case with all-natural self-care routines, tangible results are not immediate. Consistency is the key. Check out my IG highlight on consistency to see how I incorporate these oils into my daily routine. Or check it out on youtube here if you don’t have social media.
Thank you for being here!
